Institutional Open Access Agreements

ACS Transformative Agreements help your institution sustainably support the transition to open science by growing the amount of work your researchers publish in open access formats, while also providing full access to ACS subscription content. Authors at hundreds of institutions worldwide benefit from ACS Transformative Agreements each year.

How do ACS Transformative Agreements work?

ACS Transformative Agreements replace your existing ACS journals subscriptions. These Agreements provide authors at your institution or consortium with the option to publish their work open access in ACS’ premier scientific journals. Our industry-leading workflow in partnership with CCC RightsLink for Scientific Communications makes the process simple for both authors and administrators: your researchers are made aware of any applicable Transformative Agreements when publishing their article, and administrators can easily monitor uptake and expand your program without any IT downtime.

How to publish open access under an institutional agreement

If your institution has a Transformative Agreement with ACS, you may be able to publish open access in ACS journals at no cost to you.

These steps will walk you through the process of requesting open access publication under an institutional open access agreement.

Step 1

Once your article is accepted, you will receive an email to complete the Journal Publishing Agreement (JPA).

Step 1 - JPA email

Select “Yes I wish to publish Open Access” and complete the JPA signing process.

Step 1 - JPA signing

If you are part of an agreement using the Copyright Clearance Center Touch-free workflow, your open access funding request is automatically sent to the agreement administrator at manuscript acceptance; no further action is required from you.

If you are part of an agreement using the Copyright Clearance Center Standard workflow, click the “Order Open Access” link provided after you sign the publishing agreement.

Step 1 - Next Steps

Step 2

The “Order Open Access” link will take you to Copyright Clearance Center RightsLink®, ACS’s open access e-commerce partner for open access transactions.

Select “Seek Funding from (Your Institution/Agreement)” and click “Next”.

Step 2 - Eligible for OA

Step 3

On the Charges Estimate page, review the details including the agreement assigned creative commons license, and that the total due is $0.

Step 3 - Zero charges

Step 4

The Copyright Clearance Center requires a registered account in RightsLink® to complete the funding request transaction. Here you can create an account, if you don’t already have one, or sign in if you do have an account. Note that this account is different from your ACS account.

Step 4 - CCC RightsLink Login

Step 5

Review your funding request. The Billing Address is the address for the administrative entity of the open agreement, for example, the consortia or institution with which the agreement is associated with. Check that you have agreed to the ACS Terms and Conditions and click “Submit for Approval” to complete the open access funding request.

Step 5 - Confirmation
