Publish open access with support from your institution

Institutions who have renewed a full read and publish agreement

The following institutions have elected to supply a full-service read and publish agreement to their patrons.

This means patrons at institutions listed below will continue to benefit from:

  • Full reading access to ACS Publications journal content, all years
  • Free gold OA publishing for affiliated submitting corresponding authors
  • Free and immediate article deposition for affiliated co-authors on articles not covered by another OA agreement

This agreement runs through the end of 2026.

Institutions who have opted for a read only agreement

The following institutions have elected to supply a read only agreement to serve their patrons:

  • University of Manchester

This means patrons at institutions listed above are expected to have access to:

  • Journal Archives: Continued access was purchased to journal content pre-1996.
  • Journals 1996-2024: Any journals covered in this time period that your library subscribed to for at least one calendar year will remain available to you as your institution.
  • Journals 2025-future: Articles published in 2025 and beyond will be available through your institution

Patrons will not have access to:

  • Free Open Access Publishing: Submitting corresponding authors at these institutions no longer have access to centrally funded and automated Gold OA.

Note: Members of these institutions can still publish free in hybrid ACS journals, such as JACS, and remain REF compliant by posting accepted manuscripts after a 12-month embargo.


Institutions who have cancelled future read and publish services

The following institutions maintain reading access to past subscribed content:

This means patrons at institutions listed above have access to1:

  • Journal Archives: As long as your institution is current on maintenance fees, continued access to journal content pre-1996 will remain available on pubs.acs.org.
  • Journals 1996-2024: Any journals covered in this time period that your library subscribed to for a calendar year will remain available to you as your institution is current on maintenance fees.

Patrons will not have access to:

  • Journals 2025-future: Articles published in 2025 and beyond will not be available through your institution.
  • Free Open Access Publishing: Submitting corresponding authors no longer have access to centrally funded and automated Gold OA

You can still publish FREE in hybrid ACS Publications journals, such as JACS, and remain REF compliant by posting accepted manuscripts after a 12-month embargo.

Publish open access at no cost

If you are a researcher associated with a participating institution and are the submitting corresponding author, you will have the opportunity to publish your research in any ACS journal under a CC BY open access license with your institution’s support.

I’m a prospective author, how do I publish open access?

Step 1

Submit your article to the ACS journal of your choice, making sure you are the submitting corresponding author.

Step 2

Ensure your institution affiliation is correct on your profile in the ACS Publishing Center.

Step 3

Check that your affiliation is stated in the body of the manuscript as the corresponding author’s affiliation.

Step 4

When your manuscript has been accepted for publication, you will be automatically prompted with the option to publish open access under your institution’s agreement.

Step 5

Note: Authors publishing in a gold (fully open access) journal will not be required to complete this step.Confirm that “Yes, I wish to publish open access as per the agreement” is checked, and complete the Journal Publishing Agreement.

Step 6

Your institution will be alerted to your open access funding request. If the request is approved, your article will be made immediately available as open access upon publication under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license. There are no charges to pay and no further action required by either you or your institution.

Automatic article deposit

Authors who elect to publish open access will automatically have their final published article sent for deposit in PubMed Central. Please note all contents accepted for US PubMed Central are automatically mirrored on Europe PMC — nothing more is required on your part. Authors publishing open access under this agreement will also have the version of record automatically deposited in their institutional repository through the Jisc Publications Router.
