Which ACS journals are included in this agreement?
The table below shows the ACS journals where your article publishing charge (APC) should be covered by your institution, providing you do not receive funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation. SNSF funded authors should follow these separate instructions.
Unless otherwise stated, this agreement covers 100% of the APC.

Special agreement between ACS Publications and Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries (CSAL)
ACS Publications and the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries (CSAL) jointly negotiated a special open publishing agreement that secures a combination of funding options for Swiss authors depending on their publishing choices that include institutionally funded open access, funder supported open access, or individual-paid open access at a substantial discount.
At the time of article submission to the journal of your choice, you will identify your research funders and your institutional affiliation. Our systems will automatically route you to the appropriate options based on your funding sources, institutional affiliation, and journal selection as you work through the publishing process. If you have any questions, or believe your manuscript may have been routed incorrectly, please contact us.
The information below will help you determine which funding option or negotiated rate you qualify for. We recommend familiarizing yourself with this prior to submission.
Do I qualify for funding from CSAL?
To qualify for funding under this special agreement between ACS Publications and member institutions of the CSAL, you must meet the following criteria.
- You are the submitting and corresponding author
- You are affiliated with a participating institution (see list below)
- Your research was NOT funded, in whole or in part, by SNSF
If you meet these criteria you will be provided with the opportunity to publish your research in any ACS journal under a CC BY open access license with your institution’s financial support (see picture below).
Information for researchers funded by SNSF
If your research was funded by SNSF, in whole or in part, your OA publishing options under this agreement will vary depending on which type of ACS journal you selected.
- You selected a gold OA journal: If you elected to publish in one of ACS fully open access “gold” journals, we will automatically apply for your article to be funded open access on your behalf. Once SNSF approves your article for open access funding, your article will be published open.
- You selected a hybrid journal: If you elected to publish in one of our traditional journals, also known as hybrid or transformative journals, you will be given the opportunity to publish your article open at a reduced rate that was negotiated on your behalf by CSAL (see image below). If you answer “yes” you will be responsible for article publishing charges.

Automatic article deposit
Authors who elect to publish open access will automatically have their final published article sent for deposit in PubMed Central. Please note all contents accepted for US PubMed Central are automatically mirrored on Europe PMC — nothing more is required on your part. Authors publishing open access under this agreement are also free to deposit the version of record in their institutional and/or research funder’s designated open access repository.
